Alois Keller (born July 26, 1788 in Pfronten ; † December 10, 1866 ) was a German painter. He belonged to the artist family Keller from Pfronten.

origin

One of Alois Keller's grandfathers was Narcissus Keller (1711–1781) from Kappel . He ran a farm on property no. 14 (now: Sängerweg 3). One of his sons, Joseph (1740–1823), became a painter. It is possible that he received part of his training from the Pfronten sculptor Peter Heel . From 1767 at the latest, he studied in Vienna . Joseph Keller created frescos in many churches in the Allgäu ; from 1785 he also worked in Switzerland and Austria. Joseph Keller was allowed to describe himself as a prince-bishop's court painter .

In his 1774 closed marriage with Anastasia Klöck, which he later (now: Am Anger Bach 6) the house No. 208th bought from, nine children were born, including the painter Anton Keller (* 1775), who studied in Vienna and later in Croatia before mainly worked as a portrait painter, and Alois Keller.

life and work

Alois Keller also studied in Vienna, but then returned to Pfronten, where he married Thekla Stick. In 1821 he bought an economy in Weißbach , once house no. 73, now Malerweg 2. Alois Keller was probably initially influenced by his father Joseph, who still painted in the style of the late Baroque . During his studies, however, he was confronted with the newly emerged classicism . Characteristics of both eras can be found in his work.

Alois Keller created frescoes in churches in Swabia, Tyrol and Switzerland, including a Last Judgment in the Pfronten cemetery chapel and, in 1828, the ceiling frescoes in the choir, above the choir arch and in the nave of the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Hopfen am See . Keller's paintings in the Hopfen church show the Last Supper , the virtues of faith, hope and love, as well as the assumption of Mary into heaven . He inserted these frescoes into stuccoed frames that Joseph Fischer from Faulenbach had created in the course of the baroque renovation of this old church. A fourth frame, which Fischer apparently had also intended for a painting, was probably left empty due to the installation of an organ gallery in the church. According to Thieme / Becker , Alois Keller also created a representation of the Lord's Supper in the nave of the parish church in Aufkirch and four evangelist images on the gallery parapet of this church. He created the ceiling paintings in the church of the Wettingen Monastery Maris Stella in 1833; Here, too, he portrayed the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. In 1840/41, together with his sons Friedrich and Karl, he restored the Asam frescos in the monastery church in Einsiedeln .

Keller's oil paintings are preserved in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Niederstaufen , among others ; its side altarpiece shows the adoration of the three wise men; twelve medallions the twelve apostles.

progeny

Alois Keller had a total of seven children, of whom the two sons already mentioned also embarked on an artistic career: Friedrich Keller (* 1821) studied in Munich and became a history painter. He emigrated to America. Nothing is known about his further fate. Karl Keller (1823–1904) lived in Munich. Like his father, he created frescoes in a number of churches, mainly in Swabia, including ceiling paintings in the parish church of Sulzschneid and in the parish church of Aislingen . Financially, however, he was not very successful; the cost of his funeral had to be borne by the Münchner Kunstverein .

Aftermath

An exhibition on the works of the painters from the Keller family was shown in 1998 in Füssen and Zug . The Malerweg in Pfronten, on which Alois Keller's former property is located, was named after him.
