Niederstaufen is a parish village in the Sigmarszell community in the Lindau district .
history
The Roman road from Bregenz to Cambodunum ran through Niederstaufen . On the Kreuzberg - a drumlin hill - there was probably a Burgus . Niederstaufen was first mentioned as an Understophen around 1249 . The name of the place is derived from the word Stauf for mug due to its geographical location . The church in the village was first mentioned in 1275. Until the 19th century the village consisted of the places Ober - and Unterstaufen . Unterstaufen, which existed around the parish church, belonged to the Mehrerau monastery and Oberstaufen, which existed from the Rössle inn belonged to the Langnau monastery and the Hergensweiler parish . With the merging of the two places into one parish, the church of St. Peter and Paul was built. During the regional reform in Bavaria in 1972 , the municipality of Niederstaufen was incorporated into the municipality of Sigmarszell.
