Joseph Keller (baptized March 6, 1740 in Pfronten -Kappel, † January 4, 1823 in Pfronten-Ried) was a German painter .

Life

Joseph Keller was the second son of seven children of Narcissus and Anna Keller, nee. Wind, baptized in Pfronten-Kappel in the Allgäu . Oral tradition says that Joseph Keller's artistic talent was discovered by the sculptor Peter Heel , the builder of the Pfrontner parish church tower. Keller then learned oil and fresco painting from Balthasar Riepp in Vils . The Vilser Joseph Kögl reported about it in 1830 with the anecdote that Keller found his teacher Riepp "often sunk at the altar in very pious contemplation, in which nobody was allowed to disturb him".

Joseph Keller's first signed work from 1764 is a ceiling painting in the bay room of the abbot's summer prelature of the Benedictine monastery of St. Mang in Füssen . In January 1767, Keller enrolled in the copper engraving class at the Academy in Vienna . In 1772 Keller painted next to Josef Anton Zoller and Franz Josef Haller one of the ceiling paintings of the parish church St. Georg in Neustift in the Stubai Valley . The motif of the choir fresco was a Last Supper .

His sons Alois and Anton Keller also embarked on an artistic career. One of his grandchildren was the painter Karl Keller .
