Until the 19th century

In the years 16/15 BC BC Tiberius and Drusus , the step-sons of the Roman emperor Augustus , began to conquer the Alpine foothills as far as the Danube. Since about 500 BC This area was populated by Celts. A main artery was for the Romans the Via Claudia was applied, the 46/47 n.. Chr. This Roman military road led from Verona over the Fernpass, Reutte in Tyrol, past Füssen and on to Augsburg . A connecting road was laid out near Vils, which led through the later settlement area of Nesselwang and further into the Roman Cambodunum , today's Kempten (Allgäu) . The last Romans withdrew from what is now Bavaria in 487/488.

Around the middle of the 8th century the wandering monk Magnus came to convert the pagan Alemanni through the Nesselwanger area; he is said to have set up a prayer cell there. Politically, Nesselwang and its surrounding area belonged to the East Franconian dominion at this time . The place became the center of an administrative district, which also included a royal court.

Nesselwang had one of the most decisive turning points in its history in the years 1310 to 1313. King Henry VII planned an Italian campaign to acquire the imperial crown , which began in 1310. In order to be able to finance this company, the rulership rights between Füssen and Nesselwang had to be pledged to the Bishop of Augsburg. King Henry was crowned emperor, but died near Siena in 1313 . So it came about that this Reich deposit was never redeemed. Nesselwang stayed with the bishopric of Augsburg until secularization .

During this time, the Augsburg bishops were the sovereigns in and around Nesselwang. The Nesselburg, possibly built in the 11th century, and the rule of Nesselwang initially received the barons of Rettenberg as a fief. After several changes, the bishops took over Nesselwang in their own administration in 1425 and appointed a bailiff on the Nesselburg. Since it burned down in 1595, the episcopal government bought an office building in 1601 (demolished in 1976).

In the 18th century the Tyrolean cartographer Peter Anich referred to the place as Groß Nesselwang , to distinguish it from Nesselwängle in the Tannheimer mountains, which he called Klein Nesselwang .

In 1429 Nesselwang received from King Sigismund , a son of Charles IV , the right to hold a five-day fair every year and a weekly market. This market right was linked to a property right for market visitors and traders. Decisive for the granting of market rights were mainly economic motives of the episcopal sovereign, as he was able to collect a considerable sum of market taxes and customs duties.

Due to its location on an important thoroughfare, Nesselwang inevitably suffered from almost all major wars of modern times, with the exception of the two world wars. In the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 Nesselwang, like almost all of the Allgäu, came to the Kingdom of Bavaria and since 1837 has belonged to the administrative district of Swabia .

20th century

After the Second World War , tourism began to develop in the municipality.

coat of arms

Description : Split by red and silver; on it three green nettle branches growing from a golden mountain of three.

Nesselwang received its own coat of arms in 1582. It shows the highly penal colors red and white , three nettles referring to the place name, as well as the Dreiberg, a reference to the Rettenbergers, the former feudal lords. The decisive factor was that the award of the coat of arms was combined with the award of a seal. For the Nesselwangern it was mainly about the seal money, about additional income that they received for seals. Today this work is usually done by notaries.

Economy and Infrastructure

The state-approved climatic health resort counted over 300,000 overnight stays in 2018. In addition to tourism, industry, trade, handicrafts and agriculture are other important pillars of the local economy.

Easter egg museum

Churches

The parish church of St. Andreas in neo-baroque style was rebuilt from 1904 to 1906 because of its dilapidation and its small size. The furnishings were created in the style of the neo-coco. Halfway up the mountain, in a clearing, stands the most famous Marian pilgrimage church in the Allgäu, Maria Trost , with its rich baroque interior. It was built in 1725 in the hermitage of Baron Rudolf von Grimming, who erected a miraculous image of Our Lady under a wayside shrine. The picture survived a fire unscathed and attracted numerous pilgrims to the mountain. Today a baroque high altar with light rococo elements surrounds the copy of the painting. The linden tree in the clearing is over 350 years old. The church can be reached on foot via the Kreuzweg or a toll road. Every year in May the traditional costume pilgrimage of the Allgäu Gauverband to Maria Trost takes place.
