Irene Epple (* 18th June 1957 in Seeg in the Allgäu as Irene Epple ) is a former German alpine skier . Her younger sister Maria was also successful in the Ski World Cup.
biography
Her first big success was the second place at the World Ski Championships in the downhill in 1978 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . She missed another medal in the giant slalom: after the first run she was surprisingly in the lead with start number 26 and 0.11 seconds ahead of her sister (and ultimately the winner) Maria, but fell back to fourth place. She won the Olympic silver medal in giant slalom in Lake Placid in 1980 and was the Ski World Cup winner in 1982 in giant slalom and combined . Epple won six German championships between 1973 and 1981, three each in downhill skiing and three in giant slalom. She was voted German Sportswoman of the Year in 1980. During her career, she suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in her knee that was untreated for six years and resulted in osteoarthritis in the knee.
She won the first ever women's Super-G in World Cup history, which was held in Verbier on January 9, 1983 , with start no. 5 wore. On March 4, 1982 there was the only double victory for the Epple sisters: In the giant slalom of Waterville Valley , Irene won 0.26 seconds ahead of Maria.
After her career, Epple studied medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1992 she received her doctorate with the work The effects of differently absorbable carbohydrates on the carbohydrate and fat metabolism of obese and normal-weight test persons . In November 1994 she married the then Federal Minister of Finance Theo Waigel . She has a son with him. In 2004 she was awarded the Bavarian Sports Prize in the "High-Performance Athlete Plus" category.
Epple is involved in the board of trustees of the Tabaluga Children's Foundation and in the context of the Christmas parcel campaign "Present with a heart" (initiated by the non-governmental organization humedica e.V. ) for children in need. She was the long-standing patron of the Children's Health Foundation and was appointed honorary curator in 2016. From 2002 (re-election 2008) she was two terms of office for the CSU district councilor in the district council of the Ostallgäu district .
The patronage for the first Alpine World Ski Championships of the Deaf in Nesselwang in the Allgäu from 23 February to 2 March 2013 Epple took along with her husband.

On Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 11.00 am, Prime Minister Horst Seehofer presented her with the Cross of Merit on the ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in the dome hall of the Bavarian State Chancellery . She is also the bearer of the silver bay leaf .
