The German Swimming Association (DSSV for short) was a specialist sports association for swimming, water polo, water jumping and synchronized swimming in the German Democratic Republic . On the 3rd / 4th It was founded in Zeitz on May 1st, 1958 and dissolved on November 30th, 1990 as part of German reunification . In 1984, 82,035 people were members of the DSSV.
predecessor
On October 1, 1948, the German Sports Committee (DS) was founded in the Soviet zone of occupation , whose swimming division was responsible for sports from 1949 and the swimming section from May 1951 and was incorporated into FINA .
The German Sports Committee was appointed as an independent mass organization in March 1952, but as early as July 1952 its position as the highest sports authority was revoked and transferred to the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sports. In April 1957, the German Sports Committee was dissolved and the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB) was founded. In the DTSB, the sections of the German Sports Committee were converted into sports associations and the German Swimming Association was founded in 1958.

Events
On April 12 and 13, 1968, the DSSV hosted a short course championship for the first time, which up to and including 1989 always took place in Rostock.
41 GDR swimming championships were held up to and including 1990.
On 24./25. July 1954, the first GDR championships in synchronized swimming took place in Magdeburg.

The swimming athletes of the DSSV were very successful in international competitions, partly due to the state-organized doping system .

Water polo
Only one German water polo team was allowed until the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo . The team eligible to play was determined in qualifying games between the DSSV and the German Swimming Association . In 1964 the GDR water polo team took 6th place at the Olympics.
Synchronized swimming
Was hardly promoted. No notable successes.

On October 19, 1990, the two association presidents Bodo Hollemann ( German Swimming Association ) and Wilfried Windolf (DSSV) signed an agreement in Hanover that the five newly founded state swimming associations Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia in the Germans Swim bandage recordings.
The DSSV's seal mascot served as a template for the TRIXI event badge introduced by the German Swimming Association in 1993.
