Sebastiaan Clemens Verschuren (born October 7, 1988 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch freestyle swimmer .

Career

Sebastiaan Verschuren was the first Dutch champion in the 1500 m freestyle in 2005 and took part in the Junior European Championships, where he was eleventh over this distance. A year later he was ninth over 1500 and tenth over 400 m freestyle at the Junior European Championships. He then made his debut at the 2006 European Championships in Budapest in the senior category and reached 19th place over 1500 m.

In the following years, Verschuren concentrated increasingly on the 100 and 200 m freestyle. At the 2009 World Championships , he reached the final over 200 m and finished in seventh place. A year later, he won his first international medals at the European Championships in Budapest : bronze over 200 m freestyle and with the relay over 4 × 100 m medals. He also reached the finals over 100 m freestyle and was sixth. At the 2011 World Championships , he just missed the final in the 200 m freestyle in ninth place, finished eighth in the 100 m freestyle and fifth in the individual relay relay.

Sebastiaan Verschuren took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London for the Netherlands and finished fifth in the 100 m freestyle in a personal best. In 2013, his best result at the world championship was 9th place in the 200 m freestyle, before he won bronze with the mixed relay in the 4 × 50 m freestyle at the European short course in Herning . The best result of his individual starts was 8th place in the 100 m freestyle. At the 2014 European Championships in Berlin , he reached 6th place over 200 m and 10th place over 100 m freestyle; with the relays over 4 × 200 m freestyle and 4 × 100 m individual medley, he took fifth and eighth place respectively.

At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Verschuren reached the final of the 200 m freestyle and was fifth; over 100 m freestyle he was eliminated in the semifinals. As the starting swimmer of the mixed relay over 4 × 100 m freestyle, he won silver with Joost Reijns , Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Femke Heemskerk behind the quartet from the USA. With the men's relay over 4 × 200 m freestyle he was seventh. In 2016 he won four medals at the European Championships in London: Gold in the 200 m freestyle and in the relays in the 4 × 100 m freestyle mixed and 4 × 200 m freestyle men as well as silver in the 100 m freestyle behind Luca Dotto .

Verschuren won a total of 29 Dutch championship titles on the short and long track between 2005 and 2016 and trains in Amsterdam under Martin Truijens.

Sebastiaan Verschuren is part of the relay that holds the Dutch national records for 4 × 100 m freestyle, 4 × 200 m freestyle and 4 × 100 m medley (long track).
