Kari Peter Conrad von Bagh (born August 29, 1943 in Helsinki , Finland ; † September 17, 2014 there ) was a Finnish film historian , director , author and university professor .

Life

Von Bagh graduated from secondary school in Oulu in 1961 . In 1970 he became a Master of Arts at the University of Helsinki with a thesis on the film Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock . He has a doctorate in 2002 Social Sciences PhD .

The film historian wrote 40 books in his life, most of them on topics related to cinema, and worked as a director for 60 cinema and television films. He taught at several schools and universities, for example his 2001 at Aalto University in Helsinki. In 2009 he wrote the book Salainen muisti , which is designed as a school book about cinema and film.

Von Bagh co-founded and then headed the Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä in Lapland, Finland in 1986 . Since 2001 he has been artistic director of the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival in Bologna , Italy . In 2004 he was a member of the jury at the competitions of the International Film Festival in Cannes .

From 1966 to 1969 von Bagh was director of the Finnish Film Archive and then the program planner for the archive until 1984.

Von Bagh was the translator of three novels by B. Traven . His book about the Finnish film director Aki Kaurismäki was published in German in 2014.

Prizes and awards

  • 1984 to 1999: Artist grant for 15 years from the Arts Promotion Center Finland .
  • He has received a number of prizes and awards for his work, including the 2007 Finlandia Prize for the non-fiction book Sininen laulu (The Songs of Finland).
  • 2011: Scholarship from the Finnish Cultural Foundation (Suomen Kultuuriahasto).
