Il Cinema Ritrovato

Il Cinema Ritrovato is a film festival dedicated to the history of cinema . It shows classics, retrospectives and the latest restored films from laboratories and film archives around the world. Most of the films shown date from early cinema up to the 1960s. It is organized every summer by the Cineteca di Bologna and is the world's most important festival for film restoration.

history

The Cinema Ritrovato was founded in 1986 as a three-day event and has grown over time. In 2019 the film festival showed around 400 films over nine days (June 22–30, 2019). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the planned date for 2020 (June 20-28 ) was set to the period June 25-31 . August postponed.

Sections

A small number of the sections recur annually, for example the Cento anni fa section , in which films are shown that were released exactly 100 years ago. Another regular series is Ritrovati e Restaurati , which shows selected new restorations (both digital and analog) and rediscoveries from around the world. The majority of the sections are reprogrammed every year and are devoted to a retrospective of a director or the production of a film country in a certain period of time.

Prizes and awards

The festival awards prizes for DVD and Blu-ray releases, the so-called DVD Awards : Best Special Features, Best Box Set, Best Rediscovery of a Forgotten Film, Best Single Film Release and the Peter von Bagh Award.

The film festival takes place in several locations in the center of Bologna . The venues include the open-air performance every evening on the Piazza Maggiore with several thousand spectators. On the grounds of the Cineteca di Bologna at the Piazzetta Pier Paolo Pasolini you will find the Cinema Lumière with several halls ( Sala Officinema / Mastroianni and Sala Scorsese ) and the auditorium - DAMSLab . The city's cinemas used during the festival include: Pop Up Cinema Medica Palace , Cantiere Modernissimo , Cinema Arlecchino , Cinema Jolly and Sala Cervi .

Il Cinema Ritrovato on tour

The festival is working with institutions around the world to make part of the festival program accessible outside of Italy. In Germany, parts of the program were shown at the Caligari in Wiesbaden and at the Babelsberg Film University in Potsdam .
