The Caligari Filmbühne ( spelling Caligari FilmBühne ) is a municipal cinema in Wiesbaden. It is located on the market square between the Marktkirche and Wilhelmstrasse . The cinema is the venue for various film festivals , the German television crime award and various other cultural events. The name refers to the expressionist silent film Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari .

history

In 1926 the cinema was founded as the silent film cinema Ufa im Park . The first film shown was Faust - a German folk tale by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau . After 1945 the cinema was used by the US occupation.

In 1955 the cinema was renovated and redesigned. Modern elements have been added to the neo-Gothic style. From 1980 the German Film Institute showed once a week among other things its own film material and the cinema was named Archivkino Caligari .

A second renovation took place in 1999. After its completion in January 2000, the municipal program was started with daily screenings and the cinema was renamed Caligari Filmbühne . The building is now a listed building. The Wiesbaden Oscar winner Volker Schlöndorff described the cinema as a "jewel among the movie theaters".

program

The Caligari Filmbühne shows around 18 to 20 screenings a week, including four to five by the German Film Institute. The weekly program includes silent films with live music, avant-garde films , portraits and themed series.

The gay and lesbian film festival Homonale has been held annually in the Caligari cinema since 2001 . The goEast film festival takes place there in spring and the exground film festival in November .

The annual television crime film festival in the Caligari cinema closes with the award of the German television crime award.

Awards

The Caligari Filmbühne won the Hessian film art award in the municipal cinemas category every year from 1998 to 2010 .

In the years 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009 to 2011, the Federal Association of Communal Film Work awarded the Caligari Cinema the Kinemathekenpreis. In 2001, the City of Wiesbaden's magistrate received the Hessian Monument Protection Prize for the "exemplary restoration of the Caligari film stage".
