Geir Lippestad (2011)

Geir Lippestad (born June 7, 1964 in Hønefoss ) is a Norwegian lawyer and since 2015 Oslo City Councilor for Economy and Local Property.

Life

Lippestad owns a law firm in Oslo. He specializes in property and labor law.

In 2002, Lippestad defended a neo-Nazi in the murder of Benjamin Hermansen , who was involved in the murder of the Norwegian-Ghanaian youth Benjamin Hermansen and who was sentenced to 17 years in prison. In Lippestad's own words, it was "the first racially motivated murder in Norway."

Lippestad became internationally known as the defender of the right-wing extremist assassin Anders Behring Breivik , who committed the 2011 attacks in Norway . In 2013 he published the book Det vi kan stå for (about: What we can stand for ), in which he describes the challenge of defending a mass murderer in connection with the trial. In the book he is committed to the ideals of democracy and the rule of law . After the publication, several well-known lawyers in Norway accused Lippestad of breaching the duty of confidentiality and loosely dealing with legal ethical principles. The Norwegian Bar Association acquitted him of this criticism. In 2015, the legal relationship between Lippestad and Breivik ended when Breivik tried to sue for human rights abuses because he is isolated in prison. There were disputes about the strategy, Breivik then chose another lawyer.

Lippestad is a member of the social democratic Arbeiderpartiet and was temporarily deputy chairman of the local association in Nordstrand . From 2005 to 2010 he was Secretary General of the Norwegian Deaf Association (Hørselshemmedes Landsforbund). On October 21, 2015, he was appointed to the Oslo City Council for Economy and Local Ownership.

He lives in Oslo, has a second marriage to the nurse Signe Lippestad (née Husebye) and has eight children: two from his first marriage, four from Signe's first marriage, two together. One of his daughters was disabled and almost deaf . She fell ill during the Breivik Trial and died in 2013 at the age of 17.
