Manuel de Oliveira (athlete, 1940)

Manuel Figueiredo de Oliveira (born October 20, 1940 in Mangualde , † October 19, 2017 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese athlete . In 1964 he was an Olympic gold medalist in the 3000 meter obstacle course .

Career

Manuel de Oliveira started at the Olympic Games in Rome and was eliminated as sixth in his prelim over 5000 meters . At the European Championships in Belgrade in 1962 , Oliveira missed out on 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters in the preliminary run, and in the 1,500-meter run he set a new national record in 3: 48.8 minutes. Two years later at the Olympic Games in Tokyo Oliveira won the first heat over the obstacles ahead of Ivan Bjeljajew . In the final, Oliveira increased to his personal best of 8: 36.2 minutes and finished fourth behind Belyayev. He achieved the best Olympic placement of a Portuguese athlete until then, only twelve years later Carlos Lopes won the first medal. At the European Championships in Budapest in 1966 and at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Oliveira missed the finals as sixth and eighth of his preliminary run.

At a height of 1.71 meters, Oliveira's competition weight was 59 kilograms.
