Malcolm Spence (athlete, 1936)

Malcolm Spence ( Malcolm Emanuel Augustus "Mal" Spence; born January 2, 1936 in Kingston ; † October 30, 2017 ) was a Jamaican sprinter .

At the Olympic Games in 1956 he was eliminated over 200 m in the preliminary run and reached the semifinals over 400 m . In the 4 x 400 meter relay , the Jamaican team was disqualified in the final.

In 1958 he won bronze with the Jamaican team in the 4-by-440-yard relay at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff .

Starting for the West Indian Federation , he won bronze over 400 m and gold with the West Indian team in the 4-by-400-meter relay at the Pan-American Games in Chicago the following year . Also as part of the West Indian team, he again reached the semi-finals over 400 m at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome and won bronze in the 4 x 400 meter relay.

In 1962 he won bronze over 400 m at the Central America and Caribbean Games . At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth , he was fifth over 440 yards and won the Jamaican 4-by-440-yard relay.

He celebrated further successes with the Jamaican 4 x 400 meter relay at the Pan American Games in São Paulo in 1963 (bronze) and at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo (fourth place).

He set his personal best over 440 yards of 46.7 s (corresponds to 46.4 s over 400 m) on May 30, 1959 in Modesto .

His twin brother Melville Spence was also a sprinter on the Jamaican Olympic team in 1956 and 1964.
