Melville Spence

Melville Spence ( Melville Emanuel Alfonso "Mel" Spence; born January 2, 1936 in Kingston , † October 28, 2012 in Florida ) is a former Jamaican sprinter and middle-distance runner .

In 1955 he was fifth at the Pan American Games in Mexico City over 400 m and won silver in the 4-by-400-meter relay .

At the Olympic Games in 1956 he was eliminated over 200 m in the preliminary run and reached the semifinals over 400 m . In the 4 x 400 meter relay, the Jamaican team was disqualified in the final.

In 1959 he was fourth at the Pan American Games in Chicago over 800 m and won the 4-by-400-meter relay of the West Indian Federation .

In 1962 he won silver over 800 m at the Central America and Caribbean Games . At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth , he finished sixth over 440 yards and won the Jamaican 4-by-440-yard relay.

The following year he won silver over 400 m at the Pan American Games in São Paulo in 1963 with his personal best of 46.94 s and bronze in the 4 x 400 meter relay.

At the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, he came in fourth place with the Jamaican 4 x 400 meter relay.

His twin brother Malcolm Spence was also a sprinter on the Jamaican Olympic team in 1956 and 1964.
