Aggrey Awori

Aggrey Siryoyi Awori (born February 23, 1939 in Budimu ) is a Ugandan politician, diplomat and editor.

Life

Awori was born in the village of Budimu, barely two kilometers from the Kenyan border, as the tenth of 17 children of the priest Jeremiah Awori and Miriam Awori. His siblings include Moody Awori , a Kenyan politician, and Mary Awori . From May 1961 to June 1965 he studied at Harvard University . Since then he has been married to Thelma Awori , UNDP Director for Africa.

He competed as a 110-meter hurdler at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and 1964 in Tokyo . Since 1964 he has held the Ugandan national record in the 110-meter hurdles.

He worked for Uganda as an ambassador to the United States and the Benelux countries , among others . After Idi Amin's takeover of power , he was arrested as the then general director of radio and fled to Kenya, where he worked for several years as a journalism lecturer at the University of Nairobi . After Amin was overthrown and Yoweri Museveni came to power , he went into the bush for some time and led a rebel group. But he soon turned back to mainstream politics. In 1994 he became a member of the Constituent Assembly. Since 1996 he has represented the Busia Nord constituency in the Ugandan parliament . In the 2001 presidential election , he ran against Museveni and achieved the third largest number of votes with 1.42 percent of the vote.
