Presidential elections in Uganda 2001

The presidential elections in Uganda took place on June 26, 2001 at the same time as the parliamentary elections. With a turnout of 67.74 percent of the 10,775,836 eligible voters, the winner of the election was the previous incumbent Yoweri Museveni , who received 69.45 percent of the vote , beating his competitor Kizza Besigye , who received 27.69 percent.

Six candidates ran for election, in addition to the favorites and only candidates with real chances of victory Yoweri Museveni and Kizza Besigye, these were Muhammad Mayanja Kibirige , Karuhanga Chapaa , Francis Bwengye , Charles Ssenkubuge and Aggrey Awori .

Museveni was re-elected with 69.45 percent, Besigye received 27.69 percent of the vote. Awori won 1.42 percent of the vote, Kibirige 1.00 percent, Bwengye 0.31 percent and Chaapa 0.14 percent.

The 214 members of parliament were also elected in the 17,308 polling stations.
