President of Uganda
The President of Uganda is the head of state of Uganda . The office emerged as a more representative office alongside the prime minister. It was only after Milton Obote repealed the constitution in April 1966 and combined the offices of president and prime minister that the office of president became the most important office of the Ugandan state. In 1995 a new constitution was passed by the Ugandan people . According to this, the head of state is directly elected by the people for a term of five years in free, secret, general and direct election. Yoweri Museveni has won all previous elections .
Presidential election
First election on May 9, 1996
The first election took place on May 9, 1996, with a turnout of 72.6% (Yoweri Museveni 75.5%; Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere 22.3%; Muhammad Kibirige Mayanja 2.2%).
Second election on March 12, 2001
According to the constitution, the second election took place on March 12, 2001 with a turnout of 70.3% (Yoweri Museveni 69.33%; Kizza Besigye 27.82%; Aggrey Awori 1.41%; Muhammad Kibirige Mayanja 1.00%; Francis Bwengye 0.31%; Karuhanga Chapaa 0.14%).
Third election on February 23, 2006
The third presidential election took place on February 23, 2006. After a constitutional amendment , which on the one hand lifted the previous restriction of the presidential office to two terms of office of the same office dress, on the other hand it made it possible to turn away from the movement system and thus to the first party election in 25 years, Yoweri Museveni ( NRM-O ) was awarded 59.28% confirmed in office. The voting shares attributable to his challengers can be deciphered as follows: Kizza Besigye (FDC) 37.36%; John Ssebaana Kizito (DP) 1.58%; Abed Bwanika (candidate without party affiliation) 0.95% and Miria Obote (UPC) 0.82%.
Fourth election on February 18, 2011
On February 18, 2011 the presidential election in Uganda 2011 took place. With a turnout of 59.29%, Yoweri Museveni ( NRM-O ) was re-elected with 68.38%. The results of the opposing candidates were as follows: Kizza Besigye (FDC) 26.01%; Norbert Mao (DP) 1.86%; Olara Otunnu (UPC) 1.58%; Beti Kamya (Uganda Federal Alliance) 0.66%; Abed Bwanika (People's Development Party) 0.65%; Jaberi Bidandi Ssali (People's Progress Party) 0.44% and Samuel Lubega (candidate without party affiliation) 0.41%.
Fifth election in 2016
The presidential election in Uganda in 2016 on February 18, 2016 confirmed Museveni again in office, this time with 60.75%. His most important rival candidate, Kizza Besigye (FDC), rose to 35.37%. Amama Mbabazi (Go Forward), former Prime Minister, received 1.43% of the vote, all other candidates received less than 1% of the vote. The election was criticized by election observers because of various irregularities.
