Benedicto Kiwanuka ( May 8, 1922 - September 22, 1972 ) was a Ugandan politician.

Kiwanuka was Uganda's first native prime minister and the leader of the Democratic Party .

After graduating from school, Kiwanuka came to the King's African Rifles , where he achieved the rank of sergeant major in World War II . After the war he worked as an interpreter at the High Court of Uganda. From 1950 to 1952 he attended a law seminar in Lesotho before studying law at University College London from 1952 to 1956 . In February 1956 he was inducted into the Gray's Inn Bar Association. After returning to Uganda, he worked as a lawyer until 1959.

In 1958 he was elected chairman of the Democratic Party. After winning the 1961 elections, he became Prime Minister of Uganda on March 1, 1961. The 1962 elections were lost to an alliance between Uganda People's Congress and Kabaka Yekka , so it was Milton Obote who led the country to final independence as Prime Minister on October 9, 1962.

Kiwanuka was arrested by the Obote government in 1969. After Idi Amin came to power , he was released and assumed the office of President of the Supreme Court of Uganda . But in this position he came into conflict with Amin, who often disregarded the jurisprudence. This eventually led to the killing of Kiwanuka by Amin's followers in 1972.
