Ruhakana Rugunda (born November 7, 1947 in Kabale ) is a Ugandan politician and diplomat who was appointed Prime Minister of his country on September 18, 2014 as the successor to Amama Mbabazi . Previously, he was Minister of Health (2013-14), Ambassador of Uganda to the United Nations in New York and Minister of Internal Affairs and Member of Parliament for Cabal.

Life

Rugunda was born in the Kabale district. He attended Kigezi School and Busoga College. He then studied at Makerere University and later graduated from the University of Zambia with a degree in medicine . He then studied at the University of California, Berkeley and received a degree in public health.

Rugunda subsequently worked as a medical officer in Zambia , as a doctor in the Washington DC General Hospital and at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi . In 1985 he met with the leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) at the Zumgrün Jäger” inn in Unterolberndorf to draw up a constitution for the liberated Uganda.

Over the years Rugunda has served as Minister of Health, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Information, Minister of Labor, Transport and Communications, and Commissioner for the Animal Industry, Game and Fisheries. He was also Chairman of the Council of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

In July 2006, Rugunda led a government team to Juba , Sudan , to negotiate peace with the Lord's Resistance Army . Rugunda has been Uganda's Ambassador to the United Nations in New York since December 2008. Uganda was a non-permanent member of the Security Council for two years from January 2009 .
