The National Resistance Movement ( NRM ; German National Resistance Movement ) is a political organization in Uganda . It is led by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni , the President of Uganda, and is the country's most important political movement. It emerged as a political subsidiary of the National Resistance Army and formed the government when Museveni came to power in 1986. In 1995 Uganda's political system was reshaped and the Movement was officially established as the most important non-partisan grassroots organization of the Ugandan people. In 2003, however, this was reversed in favor of a freer, multi-party system.
