history

University of Zambia in Lusaka, 1978

The legal basis for its establishment is Act No. 66 of 1965 ( Act of Parliament No. 66 of 1965 ). It was founded almost hastily, since at the time of its independence Zambia had just over 100 graduates with a population of 3.5 million . No other British colony gained independence with so few college graduates. The University of Zambia based its claim and orientation initially on the Rhodes-Livingstone Institute of Social Research (see Manchester School of Anthropology ).

In the first years of its existence three academic departments (schools) worked: education, humanities and social sciences and natural sciences. In the first academic year 312 students were enrolled. With the consolidation of the founding structures, the university's offering expanded to include further departments: Law (1967), Technology (1969), Medicine (1970), Agricultural Sciences (1971), Mining (1973), Economics and Industrial Studies (1978, on the Ndola Campus ), Environmental Protection (1981, on the Ndola Campus ) and Veterinary Medicine (1983).

In 1975 a federal structure for the university was established. This resulted in three main locations, in the cities of Lusaka, Ndola and Solwezi in the North-Western province . The University of Zambia Act laid the constitutional basis for this from 1979.

Academic offer

Around 10,122 students study at the university (2007). The campus is on the Great East Road , about seven kilometers outside of downtown Lusaka. The medical campus is on Ridgeway near the university hospital.

The University of Lusaka offers courses in agriculture , engineering, natural sciences, education , law and social sciences , medicine , veterinary medicine and mining . The courses last four years, in engineering and medicine five and seven years.

The university operates the School of Agricultural Sciences , which works independently.
