Southern African Regional Universities Association

The Southern African Regional Universities Association ( SARUA , German: "Association of the Universities of Southern Africa") is a transnational organization based on the personal membership of vice-chancellors and institutional membership of public and private higher education institutions in the states of Southern African Development Community (SADC). Its headquarters are in Bellville ( Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality , South Africa ).

The founding meeting took place in February 2005. The general meeting is held every three years as a triennial general meeting .

aims

SARUA strives to serve as a platform for a regional dialogue and to promote the cooperation of executives in the field of higher education in order to positively influence coordinated higher education development in Southern Africa . To this end, the following principles should be used in a beneficial way:

  • the development of a regional identity for higher education that expresses the diversity in the respective regions,
  • the organization of strategic forums to improve cooperation, links and partnerships within the sector,
  • the marking of core areas for strategic research and analysis,
  • the promotion of skills and capacities in university management,
  • To act as an influential advocate for higher education in Southern Africa.

Partnerships

Important partners are UNESCO with its Regional Office for Southern Africa and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Since 2016, SARUA has also been a member of the Advisory Board of the Harmonization of African Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation (HAQAA), a cooperation between the European Union and the African Union to develop a coordinated quality assurance and accreditation system on an institutional, national, regional and pan-African level to support. There are other forms of cooperation, for example, with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Council on Higher Education (CHE) in South Africa and the Southern African Quality Assurance Network (SAQAN).
