The Bandes françaises were French foot troops who had been in command since King Louis XI. were organized according to the Swiss model.

The formation of the bandes françaises, like that of the Francs-archers , can be traced back to the aim of the French kings of the 15th and 16th centuries to create a national infantry .

Under Francis I and Henry II , the bandes françaises played a role in the wars against Charles V. They were reorganized during this time and were given a Colonel générale as commander. In 1582 , Franz von Guise began to transform the Bandes françaises into regiments .
