President of Mozambique ( Portuguese : Presidente de Moçambique ) is the official title of the head of state of the Southeast African country Mozambique . Since the country gained independence in 1975, there have been four incumbents in a total of eight terms. After the accidental death (possibly also death by assassination) of the first incumbent, Samora Machel, on October 19, 1986, a provisional government was set up for several weeks, in which the office of president was not assigned and his tasks were divided. All presidents so far have been members of the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique ( FRELIMO ) party.
Since 1994 the presidents of Mozambique have been determined by general elections.
