2004 presidential election in Mozambique

The presidential election in Mozambique (2004) was held on December 1 and 2, 2004 in the South African state of Mozambique . After 18 years in power, Joaquim Chissano had resigned as president and five candidates competed for the presidency. At the same time, the members of the 150-strong national assembly of the country were elected.

The announcement of the winner of the election was officially expected on December 17th, but in fact all the results were not available until December 21st.

Democratic standards

Interior Minister Almerino Manhenje spoke of an election without major problems. International observers, however, criticized a number of irregularities in favor of the ruling FRELIMO. The results listed below are the official and controversial numbers.

Results

Guebuza won the presidential election with 63.7% of the vote and took office in February 2005. Dhlakama received 31.7% of the votes cast and announced that he did not recognize the results of the election. The remaining candidates each received less than 3% of the vote.
