Partido Independente de Moçambique

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Partido Independente de Moçambique (PIMO) is a small Islamic party founded in Mozambique in 1992 .

Since the Mozambican electoral law forbids a regional or religious orientation of parties, the party tries superficially to conceal its Islamic orientation, although the attachment to Islam can be found in one of the party's manifestos and the "I" in "PIMO" for some "Islamic" as for "independente" (independent).

In its self-portrayal, the party appeals to the principles of Islam, calls for moral behavior and criticizes corruption in the country.

The 1999 PIMO presidential candidate, Yá-Qub Sibindy , who was also party leader, was not approved by the electoral commission. PIMO has run in all elections that have been held since it was founded without ever receiving more than 1.4% of the votes.
