General elections in Mozambique in 1999

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1999 parliamentary elections in Mozambique took place from December 3rd to 5th, 1999 in Mozambique , Southeast Africa , and were the second multi-party elections in the country's history.

As in the previous election in 1994, the two major parties in the country, FRELIMO and RENAMO, made the elections among themselves. FRELIMO, the country's quasi-state party, won a clear victory with just under 50% of the vote, RENAMO, the old adversary FRELIMOS from the time of the Mozambican civil war , remained the only serious opposition party with just under 40% of the votes. None of the other eligible parties won even 3% of the vote.

RENAMO stood for election as the electoral association RENAMO-UE . In addition to RENAMO, this association also included 10 smaller, largely insignificant parties. Of the 117 seats in this coalition, 99 went to RENAMO and 18 to the small parties.

Democratic standards of the elections

The Carter Center , which has been critical of this election as well as the previous one, rated the election process as "peaceful and orderly". However, the observers criticized the fact that FRELIMO had unfairly used its exclusive access to the country's media to its advantage and that technical problems and a lack of transparency raised doubts about the accuracy of the results. RENAMOS 'objection to the results was rejected by the official bodies.
