Elections to the People's Assembly of Mozambique in 1986
The 1986 elections to the People's Assembly in Mozambique were the second elections in Mozambique after the country gained independence from the Portuguese colonial power. They took place from August 15 to December 18, 1986 under the conditions of the intensified Mozambican civil war and a one-party system led by the FRELIMO state party . The 259 representatives of the National Assembly of Mozambique were confirmed by non-secret votes. Due to the civil war situation, the elections originally planned for 1981 had been postponed.
Procedure and character of the elections
It was not a question of elections in the sense of free, equal and secret votes to determine representative representatives of different groups, but rather a sequence of meetings at which a list of candidates was confirmed without discussion. The central committee of the FRELIMO state party drew up a list of 299 candidates, of which 249 plus 10 substitute members eventually formed the new people's assembly of Mozambique. At the local level, the representatives were confirmed by raising their hands after a questioning. In this way, representatives were appointed for the next higher assembly levels (city or district and then province). Compared to the elections for the People's Assembly in Mozambique in 1977 , there was a democratic innovation at these levels in that ballot boxes were used here, replacing the public handshake. In October the electoral process was temporarily suspended due to the death of the President of Mozambique, Samora Machel . At the head of this sequence of indirectly elected representatives was the People's Assembly of Mozambique.
