Armando Guebuza
Armando Emílio Guebuza (born January 20, 1943 in Murrupula District , Nampula Province , Portuguese East Africa ) is a Mozambican politician ( FRELIMO ) and businessman. From 2005 to 2015 he held the office of President of Mozambique.
Life
Armando Emílio Guebuza was born on January 20, 1943 in the Murrupula district in the Nampula province in what was then the colony of Portuguese East Africa (now Mozambique).
Promotion in FRELIMO
He became a member of the Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO) at the age of 20 , shortly after the liberation movement began the war of independence against Portugal . When independence was achieved in 1975, Guebuza was already one of the most influential generals and political leaders in FRELIMO. In the brief interim government of 1974 he was already head of the interior department. Under Samora Machel he became Minister of the Interior . During the 1980s, Guebuza developed an unpopular program that relocated rural unemployed people to cities in the north. These measures became known as "Operation Production". After Machel's death in a plane crash in 1986 , he became a member of the investigation committee into the crash. Ultimately, however, there was no definitive result. In addition, he was a member of a transitional council for a short time, which consisted of ten participants. This council ruled the country until the election of the successor to the unfortunate President Machel.
After the civil war
After the abolition of the socialist economic policy by President Joaquim Chissano , which also included the privatization of state-owned companies, Guebuza became a successful and well-paid businessman who was active in the construction and fishing industries and in export. Guebuza headed the FRELIMO delegation at the peace talks to end the Mozambican civil war in Rome (1990-1992).
Presidencies (2005-2015)
In the presidential elections on December 1 and 2, 2004 , he was elected to succeed President Joaquim Chissano with 63.74% of the vote. The results of the election are, however, questioned by international observers. He took office on February 2, 2005. In the presidential election on October 28, 2009 , he was confirmed in office with 75.01%. In addition to the office of President, he also chaired FRELIMO.
In the 2014 presidential election, Guebuza was banned from running after two terms. He was succeeded on January 15, 2015 by Filipe Nyusi , who is also a member of FRELIMO. Although there is no time limit, he also passed the party chairmanship to Filipe Nyusi.
Private life
In 1980 his daughter Valentina Guebuza was born, who rose to become a successful business woman and was shot by her husband in 2016.
