functionality

SMS with the code

The German Post AG since September 2008 offers the following procedure: You write an SMS to a service number of Deutsche Post. This replies with an SMS that contains a 12-digit numerical code, which must be written in the upper right corner of the letter or postcard as shown, thus replacing the postage stamp. The letter or postcard can then be sent normally. In the mail center, a letter franked in this way is ejected by the erecting machine and handed over to a responsible employee for further processing. This manually checks the validity of the number combination using an IT system and sticks a sticker with a matrix code on the letter / postcard and sends it for further processing. The sorting machines recognize the correct franking of the letter / postcard via the matrix code.

costs

Since July 1, 2019, the postage costs for a postcard have been 1.00 EUR and for a standard letter 1.20 EUR, plus the SMS costs of the provider. All in all, franking via mobile phone postage costs more than traditional postage. Previously, since the beginning of 2016, postage had been 85 cents for a postcard and EUR 1.10 for a standard letter plus the SMS costs.

Others

The mobile phone postage is therefore no longer a postage stamp in the true sense of the word, because it lacks the character of uniformity - identical items are produced in larger quantities.

For some time now, Swiss Post has also been offering its own applications for many mobile phones that package the mobile phone postage functionality in an attractive program interface, but work exactly as specified above.

Cell phone postage purchased before a price increase (last on July 1, 2019) may no longer be used. The codes can be sent by email to Deutsche Post (Handyporto@deutschepost.de) and will be replaced - either as a credit on the mobile phone bill or as a valid replacement code.

Deutsche Post AG plans to modify the previous mobile phone postage at the end of 2020 as part of its digitization strategy. Besides the usual postage, the customer should not incur any further costs or SMS costs. In addition, the mobile phone postage should be much more customer-friendly via app and payment options, such as. B. PayPal, processed and used for other products.
