This list of the Heads of State of Libya from 1951 to the present day includes the King of Libya, the Chairman of the Command Council, the General Secretaries of the General People's Congress and the Presidents of the General National Assembly and the Council of Deputies.
Although Muammar al-Gaddafi resigned from all state offices in March 1979, he was the de facto ruler of the country as the leader of the revolution , although his scope for influence diminished in the course of the civil war .
From February 2011 to October 23, 2011, civil war raged in Libya between the Gaddafi regime and the insurgents, with the National Transitional Council established by them as its own governing body. The National Transitional Council took full governance on October 23, 2011 following the country's official declaration of exemption. Since then, the chairman Mustafa Abd al-Jalil was de facto (in exercise) head of state, but de jure only the representative of the sovereign (similar to the Federal President in Switzerland or the Prime Minister in Japan).
On August 8, 2012, government power was transferred to the General National Assembly, which had been determined by the Libyan people in the July 7, 2012 elections . The function of the head of state was thus transferred to the president of this body.
