Route
The race started on the Sambódromo , a grandstand street in the Cidade Nova district . After about seven hundred meters, the route turned right into Avenida Presidente Vargas and followed the course of the road to Avenida Rio Bravo . Here began a ten km long circuit that had to be completed three times. The route turned left to the northwest onto Avenida Rio Bravo . On Avenida Rodrigues Alves we went north, there the Museu do Amanhã located on a peninsula was circled. Back on Avenida Rodrigues Alves , the path ran eastwards along the shore to Rua Primeiro de Março , then further south to Lago do Praço . There was a left arch leading to Praça Mal. Âncora . Now it went back east along the bank to Avenida General Justo . There the route ran in a southerly direction to Avenida Marechal Câmara , from where the course turned north-west. Then the route led back to the starting point of the circuit with several curves.
After completing the three rounds, we continued on Avenida Dom Henrique back to the Botafogo district . At the height of Rua Marquês de Olinda was the turning point from which the route led back to the junction of the circular route. Here the route led to the left into Avenida Presidente Vargas , on which it went back to the Sambódromo .
doping
There was a doping case in this competition. The Moroccan Abdelmajid El Hissouf, originally ranked 68th, was disqualified in November 2017 for taking prohibited substances. In addition, he was suspended for the period from November 8, 2016 to November 7, 2020.
Summary of the race
The race started in light rain. The field of runners stayed together for a long time, the 5 km sections were completed in 15:30 minutes or even a little slower. The leading group was very large for a long time, at halfway through the race it consisted of 46 athletes. The temperatures were too high for a fast race. At thirty kilometers, the leading group with the Ethiopian Lemi Berhanu in the lead had reduced to nine runners. The 2012 Olympic champion Stephen Kiprotich from Uganda and World Champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie from Eritrea also lost touch.
Now the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge pushed the pace significantly. After another two kilometers, four runners had cleared away: Kipchoge, the Ethiopian Feyisa Lilesa, Berhanu and the American Galen Rupp. At 33 km, Berhanu also had to tear down. Kipchoge, Lilesa and Rupp led by less than a minute in front of a three-man chase group with Berhanu, Munyo Solomon Mutai from Uganda and the Kenyan Stanley Kipleting Biwott. A short time later, Rupp also lost contact with Lilesa and Kipchoge, but remained third. Lilesa and Kipchoge were now walking shoulder to shoulder. But Lilesa could no longer keep up the pace and fell back. Soon the top three could no longer see each other on the winding course.
Behind Rupp, Ghebreslassie had worked his way up to fourth place and started the pursuit. At forty kilometers, Kipchoge was 36 seconds ahead of Lilesa, who was twelve seconds ahead of Rupp. Ghebreslassie was 59 seconds behind Rupp. On the last long stretch, Kipchoge was able to increase his lead to 1:10 minutes. Lilesa crossed the finish line eleven seconds ahead of Rupp.
During the entire race the track was wet and the sky was cloudy. Several runners reached the finish with significant signs of exhaustion due to these difficult external conditions. Meb Keflezhigi from the USA slipped briefly, falling head and shoulders behind the finish line. After a few push-ups, he got up and walked on. The Iranian Mohammad Jafar Moradi suffered a thigh injury during the run and was only able to finish the race on all fours. The Argentine Federico Bruno was also injured. All he could do was hop sideways. With the help and encouragement of the Paraguayan Derlis Ayala, he also reached the goal.
With 155 starters, this competition had the largest field of runners in an Olympic marathon to date. The 140 athletes who crossed the finish line also set a new record. The first 62 athletes crossed the finish line in less than 2:20 hours.
The second placed Ethiopian Feyisa Lilesa belongs to the Oromo people, who are oppressed in his homeland . At the finish he showed crossed fists over his head, the symbol of the protest movement in Ethiopia, which had been violently suppressed only two weeks earlier.
