final
August 13, 2016, 8:53 p.m.
Two athletes had qualified for the final, two of them directly via the qualifying distance, the others via their placements. Two Australians, Chinese, South Africans and Americans competed for the medals. as well as one athlete each from France, Great Britain, Jamaica and Uruguay.
Each participant initially had three attempts, the length of the qualifying round from the day before were not counted. The best eight jumpers then got three more attempts, the last four were eliminated.
The favorite was the British Olympic champion from 2012 , also reigning world and European champion Greg Rutherford. The Australian runner-up world champion Fabrice Lapierre, the Chinese world championship third Wang Jianan, the Swedish runner-up European champion Michel Tornéus and the US-American Jeff Henderson also entered the competition with a medal chance.
The two US athletes took the lead in the first round. Henderson was eight feet an inch ahead of teammate Jarrion Lawson. Rutherford followed with 8.18 m in front of the South African Luvo Manyonga, who achieved 8.16 m. In the second round, Wang moved into second place with 8.17 m. In lap three Lawson took the lead with 8.25 m, Rutherford improved to second with 8.22 m. In the fourth round, Manyonga took the lead with 8.28 m. Rutherford scored 8.26 m and displaced Lawson in third place. Manyonga extended his lead to 8.37 m in the fifth attempt. Henderson ousted him in the last round. The American jumped one centimeter further than the South African at 8.38 m. Then Lawson managed a supposedly better distance, but only 7.78 m were measured. After evaluating the video recordings, it was clear that Lawson had touched the sand with his left hand during the landing and thus visibly devalued his distance, which was actually clearly better, beyond the 8-meter mark. But according to the rules, the last print counted. Rutherford was able to improve his performance again by three centimeters to 8.29 m, but was thus in third place until the end. Manyonga's last jump was a failure.
