The women's hammer throw at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was held on August 12 and 15, 2016 in the Estádio Nilton Santos . 36 athletes took part.

Olympic champion was Anita Włodarczyk from Poland , who set a new world record. She won ahead of the Chinese Zhang Wenxiu and Sophie Hitchon from Great Britain.

Betty Heidler , Kathrin Klaas and Charlene Woitha started for Germany . While Klaas and Woitha failed in the qualification, Heidler qualified for the final and finished fourth there.
Athletes from Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein did not take part.

qualification

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance required for direct participation in the final was 72.00 m. Since only three throwers exceeded this value - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best throwers from both groups to twelve athletes - highlighted in light green. Finally, 70.30 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.

In the final, each participant initially had three attempts, the length of the qualifying round was not counted. The best eight athletes then had three more attempts, the last four were eliminated.

Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, three of them directly over the qualifying distance. nine more about their placements. Two Polish, American and Chinese women each competed for the medals with one athlete from Germany, France, Great Britain, Moldova, Venezuela and Belarus.

The clear favorite was Anita Włodarczyk from Poland, the 2012 Olympic champion , reigning world and European champion , and also the current world record holder . The other medal candidates included the Chinese vice world champion and third place in the 2013 World Cup, Zhang Wenxiu, the French third place in the World Cup in 2015, Alexandra Tavernier and the German vice European champion Betty Heidler.

Anita Włodarczyk took over the top position in the first lap. With 76.35 m she was ahead of the Chinese Zhang Wenxiu, who was not far behind with 75.06 m. The German Betty Heidler was third with 71.38 m. In round two Włodarczyk succeeded in the first 80-meter throw at the Olympic Games. With her 80.40 m she improved the Olympic record by more than two meters. The British Sophie Hitchon pushed past Heidler with 73.29 m into third place.

In the third attempt, Włodarczyk set a new world record with 82.29 m . She exceeded her own record by 1.21 m. Zhang improved this lap to 76.19 m. In the fifth round, Włodarczyk managed another throw with 81.74 m, which exceeded her previous world record. Heidler was able to move back to third with 73.71 m. Behind the Olympic champion, Zhang Wenxiu secured her silver place with 76.75 m. In the last round, Sophie Hitchon passed Betty Heidler again when she threw the hammer at 74.54 m and thus set a new British national record. Moldovan Zalina Marghieva finished fifth, ahead of American Amber Campbell.

Sophie Hitchon was the first British medalist in this discipline.
