Jacques Burger (born July 29, 1983 in Windhoek , South West Africa ) is a former Namibian rugby union player who last played in the Aviva Premiership for Saracens and was a national player for his country. Burger played in the position of the back row .

He was considered one of the best players in his country of all time.

Club career

Burger began his international club career in 2005 with the Griquas in South Africa. He then moved to Stade Aurillacois in France for two years in 2007 , before playing for the Bulls in South Africa from 2008 to 2010 . Burger played for Saracens from 2010 to 2017 . The third-line striker quickly built a reputation for being a tough tackler - and his performances led to his being named Saracens Player of the Year in the 2009-10 season.

International career

Burger made his international debut for the Namibian national rugby team on August 14, 2004 against the Zambian selection .

Most recently he was the captain of the Namibian national rugby team. He participated with the national team in the Rugby Union World Cups in 2007 , 2011 and 2015 . At the 2011 World Cup, he was named one of the top five players of the tournament by the IRB's Rugby News Service. Rugby News Service said of Burger that he was "a consistently bright light on his team" and that "even if the opposing score piles up, the 28-year-old continues to tirelessly tackle and force rallies in a crowd."

After a concussion in the game against Georgia at the 2015 World Cup, Burger announced his retirement from international rugby. He was then temporarily assistant coach of the national team.

Life after rugby

Burger has been an insurance agent in southern Namibia since 2019 . He continues to work independently as a farmer .
