Starting position

The main favorite was the Briton Jessica Ennis-Hill as 2012 Olympic champion and reigning world champion . However, she had strong competitors. There were the two-time vice world champion from 2013 and 2025 Brianne Theisen-Eaton from Canada, the Dutch European champion Anouk Vetter, the French European champion from 2014 and vice European champion from 2016 Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida, the Dutch Nadine Broersen as vice European champion from 2014, the World Cup third Laura Ikauniece-Admidiņa from Latvia and the European Championship third from 2014 Nafissatou Thiam.

Summary

The Hungarian Györgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas was Olympic eight
Nadine Broersen from the Netherlands came in thirteenth place

In the first discipline, the 100 meter hurdles , Ennis-Hill ran the fastest time with 12.84 s. Akela Jones from Barbados was 0.16 s slower, Carolin Schäfer ran the fifth fastest time.

In the second discipline, the high jump , Katarina Johnson-Thompson from Great Britain and Thiam set a record. With 1.98 m they presented a new world record for the high jump in a heptathlon. Johnson-Thompson needed two attempts to reach this altitude, Thiam only one. Both athletes tried their hand at 2.01 m, but failed.

The Belgian was also the best shot putter . At 14.91 m, she pushed three centimeters further than Nana Djimou Ida. Ennis-Hill lost 70 points to Thiam with 13.86 m, while Johnson-Thompson fell behind Carolin Schäfer from Germany and Theisen-Eaton with a weak 640 points for 11.68 m in sixth place.

The end of the first day was the 200-meter run . Here Johnson-Thompson was able to compensate for her weak performance from the shot put. With 23.26 s she ran the fastest time. It was 0.23 seconds faster than Ennis-Hill. Schäfer was the fifth fastest athlete with 23.99 s, while Thiam was clearly behind with 25.10 s. In the interim standings, Ennis-Hill overtook Thiam and was now 72 points ahead. Jones from Barbados was 21 points behind Thiam in third, ahead of Johnson-Thompson and Schäfer. Theisen-Eaton followed in sixth place. It was very tight and nothing was decided yet.

Thiam was the best long jumper on the second day . With 6.58 m she exceeded the German Claudia Rath, who was in the lower third of the rating, by three centimeters. Ennis-Hill reached with her 6.34 m 77 points less than the Belgian. While Theisen-Eaton achieved the fourth best distance with 6.48 m, Schäfer came only with 6.20 m. Thiam was now five points ahead of the world champion, who in turn was 46 points ahead of her compatriot Johnson-Thompson. Barbados' Jones had dropped to fourth, 60 points behind Johnson-Thompson and 35 points ahead of Theisen-Eaton. Schäfer was sixth, 24 points behind the Canadian.

Ikauniece-Admidiņa achieved the best distance in the javelin throw with 55.93 m. The Greek Sofia Yfandidou threw almost a meter and a half shorter. Thiam achieved the third best distance with 53.13 m. This increased her lead over Ennis-Hill to 142 points. This had to be satisfied with 46.06 m. The big loser was Johnson-Thompson, who achieved the third worst distance with 36.36 m. In the interim standings, she fell back to eighth place. Theisen-Eaton, Schäfer and also Ikauniece-Admidiņa were able to leave Jones behind.

Before the final 800-meter run , things looked very good for Thiam. Ennis-Hill had to be around ten seconds faster than the Belgian to win the gold medal. Four athletes still had a chance of winning the bronze medal. Theisen-Eaton in third was 12 points ahead of Schäfer and could not be more than half a second slower than the German. Ikauniece-Admidiņa was only another 25 points behind and had to catch up three seconds, Jones, 68 points behind, even five seconds.

Ennis-Hill ran the third fastest time with 2: 09.07 min, behind Miller-Koch - 2: 06.82 min - and Rath - 2: 07.22 min. However, it was not enough for the Olympic victory. Thiam was almost seven and a half seconds slower, she won the gold medal. Theisen-Eaton was able to defend her third place and thus the bronze medal. She ran the fifth fastest time with 2: 09.50 min. Schäfer crossed the finish line after 2: 16.52 minutes and had to pass Ikauniece-Admidiņa, who achieved the fourth fastest time with 2: 09.43 minutes.
