The men's decathlon at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris took place on July 11th and 12th, 1924. 36 athletes took part.

The Olympic champion was the American Harold Osborn , who had won the gold medal in the high jump five days earlier . Osborn's compatriot Emerson Norton won the silver medal, bronze went to the Estonian Aleksander Klumberg .

Conducting the competition

The decathlon was carried out according to the same rules as today. The ten disciplines took place over two days. On July 11th there was the 100-meter run , the long jump , the shot put , the high jump and the 400-meter run . On July 12th, the 110-meter hurdles , the discus throw , the pole vault , the javelin and the final 1,500-meter run followed .

Bronze for Aleksander Klumberg (EST)

The two top favorites of this competition were the world record holder Aleksander Klumberg from Estonia and the American Harold Osborn. Unfortunately, the Estonian - whose full name was Aleksander Klumberg-Kolmpere - was handicapped by an upset stomach, so that he could not achieve his full potential. Osborn and his compatriot Emerson Norton fought head-to-head for the gold medal up to the eighth discipline. The javelin throw and the final 1500-meter run brought Osborn the victory. Before the javelin was thrown, Osborn was almost 55 points behind Norton. In the two final disciplines Osborn achieved 1287.275 points, Norton, however, only 872.775 points. The bronze medalist Klumberg was almost open to Norton. Before throwing the javelin, he was 582.810 points behind Norton. In the end, the Estonian was only 21.535 points short.

Harold Osborn had won the high jump competition five days earlier . To this day, he is the only athlete who was able to win the gold medal at the Olympic Games in both the decathlon and a special discipline. Even Osborn's excellent result did not quite come close to the performance of Jim Thorpe , which he had achieved in the 1912 . However, the competition was spread over three days at the time.

For a better classification of the performance, the converted points according to today's rating system are also given. According to this table, which is valid today, there would have been various other placements. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. This is most noticeable in the pole vault , where people jumped with completely different poles than they do today.
