Imre Németh [ ˈimrɛ ˈneːmɛt ] (born September 23, 1917 in Kaschau (Austria-Hungary), today Košice (Slovakia), † August 18, 1989 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian hammer thrower . His greatest success was winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1948. In addition, from 1948 to 1952 he was the holder of the world record in hammer throwing. In addition to his sporting career, Németh also sat in the Hungarian parliament from 1949 to 1953 and then worked for a long time as an athletics official.

Athletic career

Imre Németh gained his first experience in 1946 at the European Championships in Oslo , where he took fourth place with a width of 50.03 m. On July 14, 1948, he improved the hammer throw world record in Budapest to 59.02 m and thus increased the previous record of the German Erwin Blask by two centimeters. He then took part in the Olympic Games in London and won there with a throw of 56.07 m in the final before the Yugoslav Ivan Gubijan . The following year he improved the world record in Katowice by a further 55 centimeters to 59.57 m and then in Budapest in 1950 to 59.88 m. This record lasted until 1952 when he was replaced by his compatriot József Csermák . In 1952 he took part again in the Olympic Games in Helsinki and won there with a width of 57.74 m in the final, the bronze medal behind compatriot Csermák and the German Karl Storch . His last international championships were the European Athletics Championships in 1954 in Bern , where he finished sixth with 56.86 m.

In the years 1942 to 1952 and 1955 Németh was also the Hungarian hammer throwing champion.

Career

In 1949 Németh was elected to the Hungarian Parliament , to which he belonged for a term until 1953. From 1953 until his retirement in 1980 he was director of the Peopleâs Stadium (dt. Volksstadion). He was also President of the Hungarian Athletics Federation from 1964 to 1973 and a member of the National Council for Sports Affairs from 1958 to 1963.

Personal

His son Miklós Németh was also active as a track and field athlete and was Olympic champion in the javelin in 1976 . Németh died on August 18, 1989 at the age of 71 in Budapest.
