Ivan Gubijan (born June 14, 1923 in Bjelovar , Yugoslavia , † January 4, 2009 (?) In Belgrade ) was a hammer thrower . His greatest achievement was winning the silver medal at the 1948 Olympic Games in London . At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , he also took part, but could not win a medal.

career

Gubijan was the first Olympic medalist in athletics from Yugoslavia. He was also the first athlete to throw the hammer after four body rotations at the Olympics . With this technique he was able to make up for physical deficits compared to larger and more powerful competitors. This technique is still practiced to this day.

Between 1948 and 1953 he was five times Yugoslav national champion in hammer throw and between 1947 and 1955 he improved the national record five times from 56.24 to 59.69 m. After his active career, Gubijan worked as a physics teacher and as a throwing trainer for various Belgrade clubs.
