József Csermák [ ˈjoːʒɛf ˈtʃɛrmaːk ] (born February 14, 1932 in Senec , today's Slovakia ; † January 14, 2001 in Tapolca ) was a Hungarian hammer thrower . He became an Olympic champion in 1952 and briefly held the world record in his discipline in 1952.
Athletic career
József Csermák gained his first international experience in 1952 at the Olympic Games in Helsinki , where he won the gold medal at the age of only 20 with a world record distance of 60.34 m in the final , replacing his compatriot Imre Németh as Olympic champion and world record holder . In addition, she succeeded in the first throw over the distance of 60 meters. His world record only lasted a few months and in September he was replaced as the record holder by the Norwegian Sverre Strandli . Two years later he took part in the European Championships in Bern , where he won the bronze medal behind Michail Krywanossau from the Soviet Union and the Norwegian Strandli with a throw of 59.72 m . In 1956 he reached the finals again at the Olympic Games in Melbourne , where he reached fifth place with 60.70 m. Two years later he was eighth at the European Championships in Stockholm with 61.00 m and in 1960 he was eliminated from the qualification at the Olympic Games in Rome with a width of 59.72 m . He was also an active athlete at least until 1963.
In 1953 and 1954, as well as 1956 and 1957, Csermák was the Hungarian hammer throwing champion.
Career
After his active career, József Csermák was active as a track and field coach and was Hungarian national coach from 1967 to 1970. His most successful student was the 1968 Olympic champion, Gyula Zsivótzky . In addition, in 1989 he became a member of the Magyar Olimpiai Bizottság , the Hungarian Olympic Committee.
In 2001, Csermák died at the age of 68 from complications from a heart attack in his hometown of Tapolca .
