The main role was played by the well-known Chinese comedian Zhao Benshan . Qiwen Hong plays the dead Liu in the "role of his life". Other roles are cast by actors who are popular in China.
The film is based on a true story, which has led to varying reactions from the Chinese public, from rejection to admiration. The Chinese title of the film refers to the Chinese proverb "Falling leaves return to their roots".
action
After drinking together, the migrant worker Zhao discovers that his colleague Liu did not survive this. In accordance with an earlier promise to bury him at home, he sets off with the body on the 1,700-kilometer route through China's southwest to the home village of Lius on the Three Gorges Dam .
When Zhao completed the first leg of his journey in a bus, the bus was ambushed. Zhao is able to convince the robbers not to rob his fellow travelers, but is put on the street by them when they (as well as the moviegoers) learn that his supposedly sleeping travel companion is dead. On the further way he usually carries the dead piggyback , but sometimes also transports him in a cart, as a passenger on trucks or in a huge truck tire, which promptly rolls down a long mountain slope with its contents. He wanders along the streets, hoping for a lift, pretending to take life-saving measures on his friend so that helpful drivers stop. At one point he believes that he cannot keep his promise, desperately wants to give up and die himself, but new encounters and experiences give him courage.
A family of beekeepers gives Zhao friendly hospitality. She lives far out in the country because the woman sustained disfiguring facial scars in a fire accident in a cheap goods factory. He meets a hip young man who is on his way to Tibet with his bike and the most modern equipment. To get really full, he attends the funeral of a lonely rich man who organizes it himself during his lifetime and is deeply impressed by Zhao's loyalty to his friend. During the funeral, Zhao puts the body disguised as a scarecrow on a field and can hardly find it later in the dark. He develops an affection for the homeless song, who collects trash and regularly sells their blood. She lives on the street because she gives all of her earnings to her student son, who is ashamed of her, which is why she has not seen him for two years. Zhao moves on with the body, but promises Song to return to her after he finishes his task.
When Zhao is at the end of his strength, the police notice him and his unusual cargo and instruct him to have the corpse, which is no longer fresh, cremated. When he reached Liu's home village with the urn and accompanied by a police officer, it was deserted because of the damming of the lake. However, the family left a message for Liu that she had moved to another village. The policeman, who has now developed respect for Zhao and even contributed money to the purchase price of the urn, knows that this village is seven hours away. Zhao and the policeman go there with the urn together.
