Particularly favored was the Briton Alfred Tysoe, who had run under two minutes several times during the Olympic year. His two fiercest competitors were the American John Cregan, who had also undercut the two-minute mark this season, and the French Henry Deloge, who, as a participant from the organizing club, was hoping for a good placement.

Deloge led the field for the first half of the route, with a leisurely pace of 1:05 minutes for the first 400 meters. The reason for the slow start was the participation of some runners in the 1500 meter final the day before. On lap two Tysoe and Cregan accelerated, Tysoe continued to pull away and won clearly. Cregan and Hall followed the Olympic champion by three and eight yards respectively. Hall also finally defeated the French and secured the bronze medal. Some sources even speak of Deloge's weakness and fall. The second lap was run much faster in 56 seconds.

The Dane Christian Christensen is named as the seventh finalist on the IOC side .
