There was a larger group of favorites for this race. These included the Kenyan Wilson Kiprugut, Olympic Knight from 1964 , the American Wade Bell and also the German runner Franz-Josef Kemper. Bell, however, suffered from diarrhea - Montezuma's revenge - and dropped out weakly in the run-up. Due to an injury, Kemper was so handicapped that he only made it to the semi-finals. After his impressive appearance in his preliminary round, the Australian Ralph Doubell had to be counted among the contenders for victory.
In the final, Kiprugut took the lead right after the start. At high speed he tried to break Doubell's sprint force - in the semifinals Doubell had surprisingly defeated the favored Kenyan. So the field was spread wide and Kiprugut had created a clear gap to his rivals apart from Doubell, but the Australian stayed on his heels. In the last corner, Doubell started his final sprint and fought his way past Kiprugut. The Kenyan couldn't counter, Ralph Doubell ran to victory with a new Olympic record and also set Peter Snell's world record . Behind Wilson Kiprugut, the US athlete Thomas Farrell won the sprint duel with the West German middle-distance athlete Walter Adams for the bronze medal.
Wilson Kiprugut won the first Kenyan medal in this discipline.
