Brian Kirk (* 1968 in Armagh , Northern Ireland ) is a British film and television director .

Career

Brian Kirk was born in Armagh, Ireland to a social worker and nurse. He first studied English literature at the University of Edinburgh and then attended film courses at the University of Bristol . He began his career as a director in the late 1990s with four short films . Among them is the short film drama Billy and Zorba , for which Kirk won the award in the Best International Short - Short Drama category at the Brooklyn Film Festival .

From 2002 he turned to television. His first work as a television director from 2004 to 2005 included the BBC series Pulling Moves , Murphy's Law and Funland . In 2006 he directed his first and so far only feature film with the drama Middletown . The film received a total of nine nominations at the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2007 , two of which were for Kirk himself (in the categories of Best Director and Breakthrough Talent ). From then on he also worked for non-British series, so in 2007 for the respective first seasons of The Riches and The Tudors . This was followed by the television film My Boy Jack (2007) with David Haig and Daniel Radcliffe , the miniseries Father & Son (2009), the first two episodes of the crime series Luther (2010) with Idris Elba in the leading role and the BBC miniseries Great Expectations (2011) based on the novel of the same name by Charles Dickens .

As a director was involved in subsequent series such as Game of Thrones (2011), Luck (2012) and Penny Dreadful (2015). A movie followed in 2019 with 21 Bridges .
