Les Mills

Les Mills (actually Leslie Roy Mills; born November 1, 1934 in Auckland ) is a former New Zealand discus thrower and shot putter .

Life

At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958 , he won silver in the discus throw and was seventh in the shot put. In 1960 he was eleventh in the shot put at the Olympic Games in Rome and was eliminated in the qualifying discus throw. 1962 followed at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth a fifth place in the discus throw and a sixth place in the shot put.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he was seventh in the shot put and failed in the discus throw again in the preliminary round. Two years later he celebrated his greatest success at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966 with a victory in the discus throw and a silver medal in the shot put.

In 1968 he was again eleventh in the shot put at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . At the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 , he won silver in the discus throw and bronze in the shot put. At the end of his sporting career, he came in 14th place in the discus throw at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich; in the shot put he did not get beyond qualification.

In 1968 he founded his first fitness studio . Together with his son Phillip Mills , a former hurdler, he developed group fitness programs in the 1980s.

From 1990 to 1998 Les Mills was Mayor of Auckland. Phillip Mills founded Les Mills International in 1997 to market fitness programs internationally .
