Les Mills International is a New Zealand company founded in May 1997 by Phillip Mills. The company achieved international success by developing and marketing group fitness programs. More than 15,000 fitness studios in 80 countries worldwide use Les Mills fitness programs.

history

Discus thrower and shot putter Les Mills founded the first Les Mills fitness studio in Auckland in 1968 with his wife Colleen Mills . With his son Phillip Mills, he developed the first group fitness programs in the 1980s, which were initially only used in their own fitness studios.

In 1990 Les Mills became the 36th mayor of Auckland City and Phillip Mills took over the running of the family business. Five years later, the Bodypump program made its international breakthrough. The following also achieved international success. As early as 2001, over 8,000 fitness studios were using the Les Mills group fitness programs. There are 21 fitness programs, each covering different areas of training.

Programs

The Les Mills group fitness programs are all based on a pre-choreographed exercise program, which is accompanied by specially trained trainers and current music. Each has a different focus to improve the fitness of the participants. The respective program appears every three months with new choreography and the latest music. This further development and examination at the same time is carried out by sports medicine specialists, doctors and physiotherapists.

All programs begin with a warm-up phase that prepares you for the upcoming workout and end with a recovery phase that ends with stretching exercises. There are various time formats for the programs, which the studios can individually incorporate into the course schedule.

  • The barbell is a central object of the bodypump . Weight plates and dumbbells are also used. The focus is on high repetitions with relatively low weight. In particular, this trains strength endurance .
  • Bodyattack is a full body cardio workout that consists of aerobics , strength and stabilization exercises . In particular, endurance and strength are trained through this interval training.
  • Bodybalance is a less intense program that consists of elements from yoga , tai chi and pilates . The focus is on improving mobility and strengthening the muscles, especially the core muscles .
  • At Bodycombat, the mix of martial arts such as karate , kickboxing , boxing , taekwondo and muay thai addresses all muscle groups with various punch combinations and kicks. This intensive cardio program increases endurance and strength. The entire course takes place without physical contact.
  • Bodyjam is a workout characterized by different dance styles that is performed at medium intensity. Dance styles such as hip-hop and jazz train endurance and coordination in particular . The choreography of the workout is more complex.
  • LMI Step is a step aerobic workout in which you train with a height-adjustable step. The course is supplemented by exercises with weight plates and other self-weight exercises (e.g. push- ups , burpees, etc.) This particularly stresses the lower body muscles (legs, buttocks).
  • RPM is an indoor cycling workout, an interval training that takes place at medium to high intensity. In particular, the improvement of endurance and leg strength is trained in this program. Mountains and sprints are simulated here.
  • Cxworx is a training to strengthen the back and core muscles. The program trains functional strength through exercises such as abdominal presses, leg extensions and full-body exercises and serves to prevent injuries .
  • Sh'Bam is a dance workout with the main focus on having fun for the participants. The dance moves are performed in interval form at medium intensity. With the help of simple step combinations, stamina and coordination are developed.
  • The Trip is an indoor cycling workout similar to RPM. In addition, this format requires a screen and sound system. There are various tours through virtual worlds.
  • Les Mills Tone replaces the old Bodyfive program. The concept was revised here. The course consists of a mix of strength, cardio and core exercises. Participants can choose their own intensity level.
  • Les Mills Barre is the youngest kid in the formats. It's a ballet- inspired workout. The main focus here is also on torso stability.

High intensity interval training (HIIT)

  • Les Mills Sprint is an indoor bike training with extremely fast sprints with relatively high resistance. The body should be consciously pushed to its limits.
  • Les Mills Grit also counts as high-intensity interval training. In contrast to the other programs, you can train at your own pace here. The aim is for each participant to reach their own limits and to improve over time. There are three versions of GRIT:
    • Strength - A workout with barbells, weight plates and body weight for all major muscle groups.
    • Athletic - This format focuses on plyometric training. There are mainly jumping exercises and flexibility exercises with the step.
    • Cardio - A pure cardiovascular training without aids. Only exercises with your own body weight are performed.

Programs for children and teenagers

Programs for children and young people have been developed. They should be introduced to training in a playful way. The aim is to get them excited about sporting activities. The Born to Move programs were designed for different age groups from 2 to 16 years.
