Urs von Wartburg (born March 1, 1937 in Wangen ) is a former Swiss athlete who was active as a javelin thrower for around 30 years .

Between 1957 and 1980 he won no fewer than 26 national championships, 22 in javelin, three (1958, 1961 and 1963) in pentathlon , one in decathlon .

He represented his country at five Olympic Games and three European Championships, with his best placement of fifth place with 78.72 m at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . Four years later, at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he exceeded the 80-meter mark (80.56 m), but this performance was only enough for eighth place. In 1972 he narrowly missed the final with 76.55 m. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he failed to make a valid attempt.

Urs von Wartburg achieved his greatest successes when he took part in the world and European championships for seniors, where he won a total of nine gold medals in the M40, M45 and M50 age groups.

In 1965 he was voted Sportsman of the Year. At the 1972 Olympic Games he was the flag bearer of the Swiss delegation.

Personal best

  • Javelin throw, old spear: 82.75 m, August 1965 in Olten at the stadium inauguration. On June 20, 1965, he exceeded the 80-meter mark for the first time in Warsaw with 81.62 m. This width remained the Swiss record until it was replaced by the new spear in 1986.
