Josef Schmid (athlete)
Josef Schmid (born February 15, 1953 in Altshausen ) is a former German middle-distance runner who was successful at the 800-meter distance for Germany in the early 1970s .
At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich he reached the semifinals, but was eliminated there in fourth of his run in 1: 48.8 minutes. At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1973 he won gold in the 4-by-4-round relay with the German team consisting of Reinhold Soyka , Schmid, Thomas Wessinghage and Paul-Heinz Wellmann .
In 1974 he retired from the European Championships in Rome as eighth and last of his semi-finals. In 1976 he won silver at the European Indoor Championships in Munich in 1: 49.8 minutes, but was well behind Belgian Ivo van Damme .
In 1973 and 1974 he was German indoor champion over 800 m.
Josef Schmid is 1.80 m tall and weighed 70 kg when he was active. He started for the LG Saulgau and from 1973 for Salamander Kornwestheim . With Salamander Kornwestheim's relay, Schmid was German indoor champion in the 3 x 1000 meter relay in 1975 and German outdoor champion in the 4 x 800 meter relay in 1974 and 1975.
