All three Americans had qualified for the final. The final field was completed by one starter each from Germany, Mauritius, Namibia and Portugal. The Jamaican Asafa Powell did not appear due to an injury.
The favorites were the three US runners Justin Gatlin, who had already won the 100-meter run , Shawn Crawford and Bernard Williams as well as the silver medalist from Sydney , Frank Fredericks from Namibia. The 2000 Olympic champion and 2001 world champion Konstantinos Kenteris from Greece had been excluded from the games together with his teammate Ekaterini Thanou . Both deliberately missed a doping test on July 12, 2004.
In the final race Crawford was just ahead of the home straight, followed by Gatlin and Williams. Shawn Crawford was able to break away from Gatlin and run to Olympic victory. Between Gatlin Williams it was very close until the end. On the last ten meters, Williams caught his teammates very thinly. Bernard Williams won silver and Justin Gatlin bronze. In fourth place was the Portuguese Francis Obikwelu, silver medalist over 100 meters, until shortly before the finish. But Frank Fredericks ran a very fast final straight and finished fourth at the same time as Francis Obikwelu in fifth.
In the 24th Olympic final, Shawn Crawford won the 17th gold medal for the USA in the 200-meter run . It was the fourth triple success for the USA in this discipline.
