The men's hammer throw at the 1974 European Athletics Championships was held on September 6 and 7, 1974 in the Olympic Stadium in Rome .

With silver and bronze, the throwers from the GDR won two medals in this competition. Alexei Spiridonov from the USSR became European champion . Second place went to 1972 Olympic runner- up, Jochen Sachse . Third place went to the Vice European Champion from 1971 and world record holder Reinhard Theimer .

qualification

The European champion in 1971 , third in the European Championship in 1971 and Olympic champion in 1972 Anatolij Bondarchuk failed in the qualification - in 1976 he became Olympic third again

22 participants entered the qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 68.00 m. Thirteen athletes surpassed this mark (highlighted in light blue) and entered the final on the following day.
